Our pastor has recently been teaching on the various aspects of prayer. So many things can be changed through prayer – mainly, our own hearts. As I’ve pondered these last few weeks of teaching, I’ve been seeing a lot more things about prayer online. Maybe it’s just that it’s in the forefront of my mind that I’m noticing this, however, it’s been consistent.
One of the things that I’ve been focused on recently about prayer is something that went along the lines of this: “Just because you may not feel close to God doesn’t mean you should stop praying. Your prayers don’t depend on you, they depend on Him”. I think all of us at times feel far from God and don’t even feel worthy to pray to such a Holy and Sovereign God. Why would we want to even subject ourselves to His Greatness? Why would He even want to listen to what we’re asking?
If you can relate to that, then I have a question. Would you, as a parent, not want to listen to your child if they didn’t feel close to you, or they did something wrong? Or would you lovingly open your arms and want what is best for them if they were to ask? I believe this is how God looks at us. He loves us so much – even more than a human parent loves their child. I believe that detail gets misplaced sometimes when we feel distant. Sure, He may shake His head and agree that we could be making better choices, or maybe we shouldn’t have done what we did, but nonetheless, He is always our Father. That never changes. We are always His children. That never changes. He made us. That never changes.
So, the next time you feel like giving up on prayer because you don’t feel worthy enough, just imagine your own child not wanting to talk to you because they fear they’ve done something wrong that you wouldn’t forgive or accept them. Of course you would forgive and accept them. You made them. They are forever your child, and even more so, we are forever His child.
Psalm 102:17 NLT – He will listen to the prayers of the destitute. He will not reject their pleas.
Ephesians 6:18 NLT – Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.
Psalm 66:20 NLT – Praise God, Who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw His unfailing love from me.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 NLT– Never stop praying.
